Coordination of Benefits (COB) with Medicare **Action May be Required** When coverage is available to a plan participant or beneficiary under more than one group health plan or insurance policy, questions will naturally arise about which coverage should pay first. These questions are addressed by a plan's "coordination of benefits" (COB) rules, which are very complex and continually changing. COB rules determine which plan, or insurance policy, should be primary if two or more health plans or insurance policies potentially provide coverage for the same underlying claim for benefits. COB rules are particularly important when it comes to Medicare coverage. Federal law dictates when Medicare will pay first and when Medicare will be a secondary payer. These rules are known as the Medicare Secondary Payer, or MSP, rules (see chart for breakdown). If an employer sponsored insurance policy is the secondary payer, with Medicare as the primary coverage, employees may need to enroll in Medicare Part B before the employer sponsored health insurance plan will pay out on any claims. *Action May be Required* Mutual data exchange programs help to ensure that claims will be paid by the appropriate organization/insurance carrier. With your assistance, Bene-Care can also work to ensure that you and your employees have the proper Medicare coverage in place to prevent a potential COB issue. In order to properly identify employees and their dependents who are currently enrolled in Medicare, or who are Medicare eligible at this time, please click here to download our MSP form. A completed copy of this form should be returned to your dedicated Benefits Consultant and/or Account Coordinator prior to your next benefits renewal period. If you are unsure of who to contact, please send your completed MSP form to our general inquiry mailbox at email@example.com. You may also contact us with questions at 1.800.333.1673. If you do not have any employees (or dependents of employees), who are Medicare eligible, or currently enrolled in Medicare, you do not need to complete the MSP form. For more details on MSP rules, please visit the official IRS guide to who pays first. Thank you! Sincerely, Bene-Care Agency, LLC
